Hey everyone. I decided to make a thread about Absolute Boyfriend aka Zettai Kareshi. Absolute Boyfriend is one of my favorite Manga series created by Ms. Watase along with Fushigi Yuugi and I really love the story too since it's different from other stories that I read. I really want Absolute Boyfriend to be an Anime series, but too bad it was never made into an Anime series because it ended up becoming a Live-Action Drama series instead. Hopefully Absolute Boyfriend gets an Anime series one day and that it will be faithful to the Manga. Is anybody here a fan of Absolute Boyfriend and has read all of the volumes of the Manga? or watched the Japanese and/or Taiwanese Dramas?
This is actually one of her titles I have yet to finish. Back when it came out in the states I remember picking up book 1 and liking it, but then I never got around to the other volumes. It’s definitely one on my list to buy. ^^
Over the years though I have checked out both live action drama’s of it. Though the differences from the manga kind of killed those off for me. The Japanese one just seemed boring, and then I liked the Taiwan one, but never finished it.
Oh okay and yeah the other volumes are really good. Yeah it's true that the dramas did changed some stuff from the Manga like turning the main characters into adults which to me doesn't make any sense because none of the main characters are adults in the Manga, they are all teenagers. So I don't know why the creators of both dramas wanted to change all of the main characters ages. I know there are also a lot of other changes too and I also don't get why they were necessary. I actually watched both of the Japanese and Taiwanese drama series and I think that they are both pretty good, but I still didn't like the changes that were made to them though.
Zettai Kareshi is one of my favorite Watase works. I loved the characters, the story, the humor. I watched at least one of the dramas but it was years ago so I don't remember which one it was or what I thought of it at the time. It's been a while since I've done a full read through of this series but I can understand some of the changes in the live-action adaptations - like aging up the characters, due to some of the sexual content of the series.

Yeah Absolute Boyfriend/Zettai Kareshi is one of my favorite Manga series too and oh okay. Yeah I think you're right maybe that could be the reason why both of Japanese and Taiwanese dramas changed the ages of the characters due to the reason that you mentioned and that maybe they want to make both dramas aimed towards an older audience too. I remember there was also supposed to be a Korean Drama based on Zettai Kareshi, but it was never made though and there wasn't anymore news about it either.
I love Zettai Kareshi! It's definitely one of my favorites from Watase.
Cly is right about the aging up—the content was one of the reasons. Another reason they aged them up was because of their target audience. The teens that had read ZK while it was being serialized for the first time would be young adults around the same age at the time the show aired.
Overall I liked the adaptations, but honestly, I hated how they changed Soushi so much in the Japanese adaptation! I liked his character on it's own but he wasn't the Soushi that I love from the manga at all. It's like they swapped him and his brother. I actually didn't finish the Taiwanese adaptation, and I don't remember much from it...I guess that means I need to go back and rewatch~
Oh okay that makes sense and yeah I didn't like that Souchi's personality changed in the Japanese version of the Drama either because I feel like they should have kept his personality from the Manga instead of changing it.
